One of our Solid Business Practices is ensuring all our code is under version control. We do this to protect ourselves against disasters, but Subversion is not just about data backups. It also means we have quick access to revert to a previous version of code when we need to. It means that we can easily see what has changed from one revision to another. We actually tie each of our support tickets to an actual code change so our more engaged clients can see the excellent code we produce.

How Subversion Works

Subversion is an open source version control system. It is a centralized system for sharing information. At its core is a repository, which is a central store of data. The repository stores information in the form of a filesystem tree—a typical hierarchy of files and directories. Any number of clients may connect to the repository, and then read or write to these files.

What makes the Subversion repository special is that it remembers every change ever written to it. This allows you to recover older versions of your files and examine the history of how and when your
data changed, and who changed it.

To manage the multiple file versions, Subversion uses a Copy-Modify-Merge model as an alternative to locking. In this model, each users client reads the repository and creates a personal working copy of the file or project. Users then work in parallel, modifying their private copies. Finally, the private copies are merged together into a new, final version. The version control system often assists with the
merging, but ultimately a human being is responsible for making it happen correctly.

Project Description

An upgrade to the existing static site, the new site should have a full eCommerce checkout, membership database and the extensions should be IE and Firefox compatible and communicate with the database directly.

Requirements

Firefox & Internet Explorer compatible

Simple no hassle sign up form

Membership database "My Account" access

Reoccurring payment options through Google checkout and Paypal checkout

Browser extensions customized to customer profile

Easy to use administration interface to modify client accounts and edit website content

It must 'just work', a very limited number of bugs and issues out of the gate.

Project Overview

This project was about coordinating several different technologies to work together. To mention a few .NET ecommerce platform, JSON & XML web services, Firefox extension API, IE Browser Helper Objects, SQL Server, Google checkout and Paypal checkout.

After reviewing the project requirements we established that an open source ecommerce solution with dynamic membership profile functionality was the best solution. After review of several open source solutions, we decided to implement NopCommerce. This solution offered us much of the functionality that we needed for this project including a simple content management system so the website could be modified without a developer.

One of the primary requirements was to have a simple no hassle sign up form. There should be no barrier to sign up. All validation and payment should be done after the trial has expired. To do this, we implemented an email verification system that would disable the the account if the customer did not have a valid email address. Of course the customer could sign in and adjust the accounts email if they happened to enter it incorrectly.

At the end of the project we were able to deliver a very nice solution. CraigsToolbox now has over 5000 members and is an awesome asset to the web.
